He didn’t used an “F-bomb” — but Beto O’Rourke was emphatic about taking away people’s assault rifles during Thursday night’s Democratic debate.
“Hell, yes, we’re going to take your AR-15, your AK-47,” the former Texas congressman vowed from the debate stage in Houston, Texas.
The White House hopeful has been outspoken about stricter gun-control measures, especially in the wake of last month’s mass shooting at a Walmart in his hometown of El Paso where 22 people were killed.
During an interview on CNN earlier this month he declared: “Yes, this is f–ed up,” when asked about widespread gun violence in the country.
He’s previously blamed Congress for failing to pass meaningful gun laws.
If elected, O’Rourke on Thursday confirmed that he’d be for a mandatory buyback of weapons like the AK-47 and AR-15 rifles, which have been used in many of the recent mass shootings.
“If it’s a weapon that was designed to kill people on a battlefield, if the high-impact, high-velocity round when it hits your body shreds everything inside of your body because it was designed to do that, so that you would bleed to death on a battlefield not be able to get up and kill one of our soldiers,” O’Rourke said. “When we see that being used against children… hell, yes, we’re going to take your AR-15, your AK-47.”
