Serena Williams tied some history on Thursday, and is on the precipice of even more.
The 37-year-old American dispatched fifth-seeded Elina Svitolina, 6-3, 6-1, in the first semifinal at the 2019 US Open, marking Williams’ 101st win at the tournament, tying her with Chris Evert for the most all-time.
The eighth-seeded Williams earned a measure of revenge with the win over Svitolina, who emerged victorious in their last meeting in 2016 at the Rio Olympics.
Now the top remaining seed in the women’s bracket, Williams awaits the winner of the Belinda Bencic-Bianca Andreescu semi in the US Open final. A US Open singles title would give Williams the 24th grand slam of her career, tying her with Margaret Court for the WTA record.
