A 15-year-old boy was swept away while swimming with his sister at the Jersey Shore on Sunday, police said.
The siblings were wading in the water near the Newark Avenue jetty in Spring Lake about 2:45 p.m. when they appeared to get caught in a rip current and went under, Spring Lake Police Chief Edward M. Kerr Jr. said.
Lifeguards and a relative rushed over and were able to pull the girl out, the Asbury Park Press reported.
A massive search involving members of the US Coast Guard, rescue divers and up to 80 lifeguards from neighboring towns, was conducted on Sunday afternoon.
“It’s a very, very tough situation and we’re going to try our best to do whatever we can for the family,” Kerr said.
The New Jersey State Police Marine Unit suspended its search Sunday at dusk, with plans to resume Monday morning.
Local police will continue to patrol the shoreline overnight.
