Defending U.S. Open champion Novak Djokovic retired in the third set of his fourth-round match with Stan Wawrinka because of a nagging left shoulder injury at Arthur Ashe Stadium on Sunday night.
The top-seeded Djokovic was already down two sets (4-6, 5-7) and trailing 1-2 in the third when he called it quits. Wawrinka advances to face Daniil Medvedev in the quarterfinals.
