Marcus Stroman’s mechanical adjustments pay off

Marcus Stroman saw this kind of confidence with two Blue Jays teams that reached the postseason during his Toronto tenure.

“It’s kind of unwavering,” the right-hander said after the Mets stomped the Diamondbacks 11-1 Thursday for a fourth straight victory. “You show up in the clubhouse and we feel like you are going to win each and every day. We kind of have that collective feeling, and that’s not something that you can kind of install. It’s something that is kind of there, so it’s awesome.

“Everyone, regardless of if we win or lose the previous day, everyone just kind of shows up and kind of knows what they are capable of.”

Stroman contributed to this one with his best outing in a Mets uniform: one run allowed on four hits and four walks over 6 ¹/₃ innings. The quality start was only Stroman’s second in eight appearances with the Mets.

“He was getting a lot more contact in the first three pitches, weak contact put in play and that is always going to help anybody,” manager Mickey Callaway said. “He got in the flow, he got a rhythm, he was feeling good. This was the Marcus Stroman that I have seen in the past. It’s good to get that first one where you are kind of yourself when you are on a new team and then, ‘This is who I am. OK, I have shown it, now let’s get rolling.’ He was great.”

Stroman said mechanical adjustments allowed him more “momentum” and “fluidity” in his delivery. He entered with a 5.05 ERA since his trade to the Mets, but was a different pitcher Thursday.

“My confidence hasn’t wavered,” he said. “I’ll go through whatever spurts, but I don’t hold on to a good win. I don’t hold on to a bad loss. Truthfully, I let it go and I focus on five days after, so I battle and compete regardless of what I am going through each and every time out and that is something I will continue to do.”
