Nick Foles waited patiently for his chance, and now he’ll have to wait some more.
The newly minted Jaguars quarterback left the Week 1 matchup against the Chiefs with a broken collarbone, and was placed on injured reserve with a designation to return on Monday.
That means his latest gig will be put on hold.
ESPN reported Thursday that Foles is “loosely targeting” a Week 11 return from the injury, which should sideline him for about 10 to 12 weeks. Per NFL rules, Foles can’t play until Week 11 at the earliest anyway, as he must remain on IR for at least eight weeks (the Jaguars have a Week 10 bye). That means a heaping dose of Gardner Minshew, the rookie quarterback who had a strong debut.
It’s an unfortunate start to Foles’ life as a bonafide starter, as he signed a four-year deal to join the Jaguars in March after dutifully remaining as the Eagles’ backup after leading them to a Super Bowl LII ring.
“He’s earned the right to be the starter out there and get the contract he wanted,” his former Eagles teammate Malcolm Jenkins told the Delaware News Journal. “I really was hoping for this year to be a good year for him.”
The injury is the latest in a laundry list of ailments throughout Foles’ career.
Foles’ rookie season in 2012 — when he played six games in relief of Michael Vick — ended in a broken hand, while another broken collarbone in 2014 ended his run as starter and sidelined him for the last eight games of the season.
Even after winning Philly its first Super Bowl, Foles returned to finish his contract with limited playing time instead of demanding a trade to see more game action The 30-year-old resisted overtures from the Browns to eventually start just five games in injury relief of the fragile Carson Wentz.
After being in long-term limbo with the Eagles, Foles now has a more secure future, as his Jaguars contract included more $45 million at signing.
Still, Foles will now have to bide his time to make his mark in Jacksonville.
