The man who discovered a dead body rolled in a red carpet in a trash heap in Harlem Thursday morning described the gruesome scene, which he investigated because he saw the man’s feet sticking out of the pile.
Israel Savage, 36, spotted two people looking at the pile while he was walking to his gym at about 5:45 a.m. on West 145th Street and Bradhurst Avenue, he told The Post.
“I could tell people we’re agitated. I saw two feet, what appeared to be feet, they had socks on them, hanging out of a trash bag,” Savage said of the discovery.
“There were multiple trash bags around this package, a cart, some cardboard, a carpet, and it was all taped. Looked like the intention was to cover the whole thing but the plastic had come off of the feet,” he added.
Savage said he then went to a nearby Starbucks and got a pair of plastic gloves before opening up the carpet.
“I went to the head of the body, or the head of the package, and open up the carpet, and again I wanted to see if it was a false alarm, and the head of the package was covered in plastic. It was heavy,” he said.
“I went over where the socks were and the sweatpants, and I separated the two, and it was what appeared to be a male leg, darker complected,” Savage added.
Savage called 911 and police came, interviewed him and set up a crime scene.
The man, who has not been identified, was declared dead at the scene.
