Candidates warned not to swear at Democratic debate in Houston

ABC News warned candidates at Thursday’s Democratic debate in Texas to keep it clean — just weeks after the former Texas congressman dropped an “F bomb” while discussing gun violence in an on-air interview, the latest in a series of profanities he’s uttered on the campaign trail.

The 10 White House hopefuls were cautioned by the debate broadcaster to “avoid cursing or expletives in accordance with federal law and FCC guidelines,” according to a CNN report.

“We wanted to take this opportunity to remind you that, as the debate will air on the ABC broadcast network, we are governed by Federal Communication Commission indecency rules,” said a memo from the network, sent to the Democratic National Committee earlier this week and forwarded to campaigns.

“We will not be broadcasting on any delay, so there will be no opportunity to edit out foul language,” the network cautioned.

While tensions were high for some of the first hour of the debate, no cuss words were uttered.

But if any of the Dems on stage in Houston are in danger of breaking the rules, it’s O’Rourke.

During an interview on CNN earlier this month he declared: “Yes, this is f–ed up,” when asked about mass shootings.

There’s even a shirt for sale on his campaign website that has the profanity-filled phrase printed six times — though one letter is replaced by an asterisk.

O’Rourke was asked earlier this week if he planned on swearing on the debate stage.

His response? “Maybe.”
