Why I’m the NFL’s best running back

Saquon Barkley is not boastful or too full of himself.

He is a realist, though, and in his mind, he is the best running back in the National Football League.

“You got to believe that you’re one of the best, and that’s what I personally believe,’’ Barkley said Tuesday night at an NFL Network event at Jazz in Lincoln Center for the start of the league’s 100th season. “But I do have tremendous respect for all the guys out there, especially the [Todd] Gurleys and Le’Veon [Bell] and the Zekes [Ezekiel Elliott] of the world, Alvin [Kamara], Christian [McCaffrey] — there’s so many I could list off.’’

It is clear what the Giants think of their second-year running back — remember when general manager Dave Gettleman gushed Barkley was “touched by the hand of God’’ when he made Barkley the No. 2 overall pick in the 2018 draft? Barkley lived up to that outrageous hype as a rookie by rushing for 1,307 yards and catching 91 passes for 721 yards. He scored a total of 15 touchdowns.

It is also clear what the NFL thinks of Barkley, as he was invited to this event and sat on a stage alongside Terrell Davis, LaDainian Tomlinson and Barry Sanders. All three former NFL running backs are in the Hall of Fame. All three had glowing things to say about Barkley.

“Why do I think I’m the best back in the league? That’s just how I was raised to believe,’’ Barkley said. “When I do something and I’m passionate about something I’m going to go 100 percent at it so when you stick me out there I’m capable of doing anything you want a running back to do and I think I can do it at a high level. That’s why I think I’m the best back in the league. That’s my personal opinion. Everyone can have their other opinions and I respect your opinions.

“You can’t just talk about it, you got to show it. Show it to my teammates that not only am I, I feel, the best running back in the league, I feel like that I can be one of the best teammates for my team and help my team.’’
