The White House is reviewing whether or not President Trump should commute the sentence of former Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich because his 14-year sentence is “severe,” Trump said Thursday.
Trump made the announcement in a tweet Thursday evening, a day after he told reporters he was “very strongly” considering commuting his sentence.
“Rod Blagojevich, the former Governor of Illinois, was sentenced to 14 years in prison. He has served 7 years. Many people have asked that I study the possibility of commuting his sentence in that it was a very severe one,” Trump wrote in his tweet Thursday. “White House staff is continuing the review of this matter.”
Blagojevich was convicted of soliciting bribes for political appointments, including President Obama’s former US Senate seat in Illinois.
