Video; Aaron Judge’s heartwarming meeting with a young fan

Kellen Wilson had long looked up to Aaron Judge, and on Tuesday, he got a chance to do it in person to the 6-foot-7 slugger.

The Yankees outfielder, ahead of Tuesday’s game against the Athletics in Oakland, made a point to seek out Wilson, giving him a handshake, a photo and an autograph on the child’s Aaron Judge jersey.

The story itself already would be a heartwarming one if were a chance meeting — but it was far from it.

Judge sent Wilson a jersey in December, his mother Chelsy told MLB.com, after getting word that Kellen’s father Kyle had suddenly died in October at the age of 36. Like Judge, Kyle had played college baseball at Fresno State.

Fast forward to Tuesday night when Kellen, wearing a Fresno State hat, wound up on the field Tuesday night, unaware he was about to have the encounter of his young lifetime.

“He [Kellen] had no idea, though [that he was going to meet Judge],” Chelsy said. “And we had no idea. And when the Yankees didn’t take batting practice, they thought no way. But Kyle is pulling strings from above. We are so grateful to Mr. Judge. He has been an incredible role model to Kellen, even sending Kellen a jersey back in December.”

It’s easy to see how a youngster like Wilson would have become a fan of Judge’s — a monster 470-foot homer in the 6-2 Yankees loss is evidence enough — though the moment shared between them made it even more special.

“He is exactly the kind of human and player Kyle told Kellen to look up to,” Chelsy said. “How hard he works. How he treats others. And all he stands for.”
