President Trump left for the G-7 summit in France on Friday night, but first gave reporters his parting thoughts — and a few snipes — on issues including China, the Federal Reserve, his “nice” phone call with the Danish Prime Minister and his well-wishes for Ruth Bader Ginsburg’s health.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with her,” he said of Ginsburg, who recently completed a three-week course of outpatient radiation therapy in Manhattan for a tumor on her pancreas.
“We wish her well,” he said, as he and First Lady Melania prepared to board the Marine One helicopter on the White House south lawn.
“She’s strong, she’s tough,” he said of the 86-year-old justice, who underwent lung cancer surgery in December, and colon cancer surgery in 1999. “She’s pulled through a lot.”
Confirming he had spoken Thursday with Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen, following their public spat over Greenland, Trump told reporters, “She was very nice. We agreed to speak later. She put a call in and I appreciated it very much.”
Asked if he is responsible for Friday’s 600-point loss in the stock market, he said, “not at all,” and boasted of how much the market has risen during his administration — “So don’t talk to me about 600 points.”
He also took another swipe at Fed Chairman Jerome Powell for ignoring his demands for drastic cuts in interest rates.
“I don’t think he’s much of a chess player,” Trump grumbled. “Not happy with Jay Powell.” Asked if he wants Powell to resign, the president said, “If he did, I wouldn’t stop him.”
As for his quip on Wednesday, when he said he was the “chosen one” to wage a trade war with China, Trump said, “It was sarcasm. It was joking. We were all smiling.”
