Three shark attacks take place at Florida beach in 24 hours

Three people were attacked by sharks while visiting the same Florida beach over the weekend.

The shark bites took place at New Smyrna Beach in Volusia County where beach safety officials said that two of the swimmers were chomped on just minutes apart on Saturday.

A 20-year-old surfer Emily Comfort was bitten on her left hand and wrist on Saturday.

The surfer was taken to Halifax Medical Center in Daytona Beach where she received stitches.

Less than a half-hour later, 21-year-old surfer Riley Petrovich was bitten on his left foot by a shark. He was treated at the scene.

Then on Sunday, 51-year-old Peter Bourbeau was standing in knee-deep water when a shark bit him on the right foot. He was also treated at the scene.

Gavin Naylor, director of the Florida Program for Shark Research at the Florida Museum of Natural History, told CNN that the beach was prone to shark attacks.

“If you like to surf and you surf in this particular spot, the chances are high that you have been within 10 feet of a shark,” he told the network.

“The surfers all know this. They routinely report seeing sharks in the area. While it may be news to the non-surfing community, it is widely known to scientists and surfers.”

The University of Florida’s International Shark Attack file says there have been 17 suspected shark bites involving humans in the state this year.
