Robinson Cano’s Mets season may be over with torn hamstring

Robinson Cano’s first season with the Mets could be done.

Cano was placed on the injured list Monday, and an MRI exam revealed the second baseman suffered a torn left hamstring during Sunday’s win in Pittsburgh. No surgery is required, but there is no timetable for his return.

Cano, 36, once went nearly 11 years without landing on the injured list, and played an average of 158 ¹/₂ games per season from 2007-17, but is on the IL for the third time in less than three months.

He has been limited to 86 games with injuries to his left quad and left calf, but manager Mickey Callaway said the latest ailment is unrelated.

Before his body broke down again, Cano had begun breaking through at the plate.

Struggling for much of his first season with the Mets, the eight-time All-Star was 9-for-15 with a homer and four doubles in his past four games, raising his average from .235 to .252.

Jeff McNeil started at second base in the first game of Monday’s doubleheader, and Luis Guillorme started the nightcap after being recalled from Triple-A Syracuse.

Guillorme, 24, hit .202 with two extra-base hits in four previous stints with the Mets (52 games), but is hitting .307 with seven homers in 69 games at Syracuse this season, helping the strong defender earn the nod over Dilson Herrera and Ruben Tejada, who is hitting .343 in Triple-A.

“Luis has been performing really well … and we like the left-handed bat,” Callaway said. “I think that his ability to touch the ball, put together a pretty good at-bats, even against guys with really good stuff is gonna help us out. And he can play all three [infield] positions, and play them pretty well. We felt like he was the best fit at this point, and we felt like he’s gonna put together competitive at-bats for us.”

Sources told The Post the Mets were open to potentially bringing back Asdrubal Cabrera, but the recently released 33-year-old signed with the Nationals on Monday.
