President Trump mocks potential challengers in GOP primary

President Trump on Tuesday took a swipe at three GOP politicians — dubbed the “Three Stooges” — who are contemplating running against him in a presidential primary.

Trump didn’t mention any of his potential challengers by name, in a pair of tweets issued Tuesday night, but instead gave them derogatory nicknames as he does with his Democratic rivals.

“Can you believe it? I’m at 94% approval in the Republican Party, and have Three Stooges running against me. One is ‘Mr. Appalachian Trail’ who was actually in Argentina for bad reasons,” Trump wrote in the first tweet.

“Mr. Appalachian Trail” is an apparent reference to Mark Sanford, the former GOP South Carolina governor who finished his second term when he admitted to having an affair with an Argentine woman. His office claimed at the time that he was “hiking the Appalachian trail” when he was having the affair in the South American country.

Sanford has not announced that he plans to run against Trump, but he’s been a vocal GOP opponent of the president.

“Another is a one-time BAD Congressman from Illinois who lost in his second term by a landslide, then failed in radio. The third is a man who couldn’t stand up straight while receiving an award. I should be able to take them!” Trump added in his second tweet.

The failed radio host insult is an apparent reference to former GOP congressman Joe Walsh, who announced over the weekend that he plans to mount a primary campaign.

And the final crack is an apparent reference to former Republican Massachusetts governor Bill Weld, who has been running against Trump since April.
