Mets fans, meet Willow. Willow, meet Mets fans.
Jeff McNeil and his wife, Tatiana, along with North Shore Animal League, made the introductions before Tuesday’s game against the Marlins. Jeff McNeil met the puppy when the Mets hosted an event with the Animal League before their July 26 game against the Pirates. After he homered in that night’s game, his attempt to convince his wife, Tatiana, to adopt the puppy went viral. The couple made the call to do just that.
“First time one of the Mets has adopted from us,” Kathleen Lynn, the director of communications for the Animal League, said in one of the most adorable press conferences ever held at Citi Field. “We did it as like a feel-good moment. Of course you always hope that somebody will adopt, and as we always say, every time you adopt, you save two lives. The one you take home and the one you can rescue and put in its place. So we thank Jeff and Tatiana so much.”
McNeil assured reporters that the Mets’ 10-1 record since he met Willow was only a coincidence, but a happy one at that. He did tell his wife, “If I get the puppy, I’ll hit more home runs.”
“I think it worked,” he said.
Though Tatiana wanted to meet the puppy before committing to adopt, the two went to see her the day after McNeil first met her. Just like her husband, Tatiana had few reservations.
After taking questions, the McNeils and Willow played around on the first base line with cameras looking on. It was, perhaps, the most high-profile game of fetch in recent memory.
“Already super-well behaved and whenever you pick her up, she just falls into your arms,” McNeil said. “So I think she’s amazing.”
