A couple’s kayaking trip on the Ohio River turned tragic over the weekend when the woman fell into the water — and her boyfriend drowned while trying to save her, authorities said.
Travis Hughes, 28, was boating with his 31-year-old girlfriend Jamie Dunaway and his brother when a wave smashed into her kayak and capsized the craft around 9 p.m. Saturday, the Indiana Department of Natural Resources said.
Hughes jumped in to rescue Dunaway, capsizing his own kayak in the process, and didn’t resurface, officials said in the statement released to the News and Tribune.
Dunaway was able to swim to a nearly by island where Clarksville Fire Department officials found her soon after.
Hughes’ 31-year-old brother, Mitchell Hughes, stayed in his kayak and scoured the water for his sibling until authorities arrived.
At about 11:30 p.m., Travis Hughes was found floating in the water near a hydroelectric dam by the Georges Rogers Clark boat ramp in Clarksville, Indiana.
None of the kayakers, who are all from Pewee Valley, Kentucky, were wearing life jackets, officials said.
The Clark County Coroner’s Office will conduct an autopsy.
