A drug-sniffing police dog named Ozzy from Southern California died this month after being left in a hot car, authorities said.
The dog, who served in the Long Beach department, was found dead after being left in the department-owned car by his handler on Aug. 14, cops said.
Both Ozzy and his handler were off duty at the time, Long Beach Police said in a Facebook post.
His handler immediately reported his death, which is being investigated as an accident, authorities said.
The death is believed to be heat related, police said.
The car was equipped with a heat system controller that is supposed to trigger a warning if the dog is in trouble, but police believe the alarms were not working.
Police in the department are now checking their controllers before every shift because of the death, authorities said.
“Our department is mourning Ozzy’s loss as we would with any of our employees,” police said in the Facebook post.
