Couple, Mexican nationals among the killed in El Paso shooting

A married couple in their sixties — who was in El Paso shopping for the day — was among the Mexican nationals killed in the Walmart shooting, their daughter says.

“These have been very difficult hours,” wrote Sandra Ivonne Cerros, daughter of Sarah Esther Reglado and Cerros Hernández, on Facebook.

“Right now we are together and dealing with our pain,” she said, adding that the family was “devastated” by the loss.

The deaths of Reglado, 66, and Hernández, 68, were confirmed by Mexican Foreign Minister Marcelo Ebrard on Sunday afternoon. Cerros said she was informed earlier in the day.

“We thank you infinitely for your prayers, your support, concern, calls and messages, they have been a great company during this crisis,” wrote Cerros. “We ask you to give us time to assimilate what happened, today we want to reserve ourselves from answering calls and messages, we have your understanding.”

The couple’s granddaughter, Vielka Yu, had turned to Facebook after losing contact with them on Saturday night and posted a picture with a status — pleading for the public’s help.

“My grandparents were shopping at Walmart and Cielo Vista when the shooting happened,” Yu said. “We haven’t hear from them, if you have seen them please let us know🙏.”

Reglado and Hernández were among six Mexican nationals killed in the Saturday shooting, which left nine people dead. Twenty-six others were wounded, including seven Mexican nationals.

Mexico’s president, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, said in a video address that he was shocked to hear of such violence happening in El Paso.

“El Paso is among the most calm cities in the U.S., with the least amounts of criminal activity,” he said. “That’s why this seems odd. I see it as something strange.”
