A Florida man is fighting for his life after he contracted a flesh-eating virus that’s eaten more than 25% of his skin, according to his family and a report.
David Ireland — a husband and father of two young girls from Orlando — recently contracted Necrotizing Fasciitis and has been placed in the intensive care unit of a local hospital, his brother wrote in a GoFundMe for his brother.
“He has had 3 surgeries to remove over 25% of the skin on his body. His kidneys have failed,” David’s brother, Daniel Ireland, wrote.
Daniel added that despite his brother’s situation, he’s shown some signs of improvement, such as acid number from his liver and his blood pressure stabilizing.
The brother told The Miami Herald that he’s not sure how David contracted the disease.
He said his brother swims in the pool at his condo building, but does not swim in lakes and natural bodies of water.
Necrotizing Fasciitis is a fast-spreading and rare flesh-eating disease that can cause death if not treated, according to the CDC.
