It takes more than a pitch to the face to keep Luke Voit from doing his job.
Sure, the Yankees first baseman left Saturday’s matchup with the Rockies following the bottom of the fourth inning after taking a pitch straight to the face from Colorado right-hander Chad Bettis — but not before scoring a run.
The training staff came on the field to take a look at Voit before he elected to remain in the game, putting runners on first and second for Didi Gregorius. Austin Romine scored from second and Voit went to third after Gregorius ripped a single to right field.
Gregorius went to second on a wild pitch, with Voit holding at third, before Voit and Gregorius scored on Gleyber Torres’ two-run single to left.
Voit was then evaluated in concussion protocol, and was cleared. He did leave the game however, with Gio Urshela taking his spot in the order and playing third while DJ LeMahieu moved to first.
“It doesn’t surprise me [that Luke stayed in the game initially]. I don’t think it surprises you guys either,” Romine said following the 11-5 rout of the Rockies in The Bronx. “If you know Luke, he’s going to play the game. The guy is like a bull out there. Just very happy it wasn’t worse than it was, that was some dangerous stuff going on up by the face. I think he kind of dodged a bullet there not getting it too bad.”
Boone isn’t worried about Voit, stating that he felt good about him despite having to take him out. Boone said that after speaking with Voit right after, he believes he’ll be OK.
Tensions flared in the bottom of the eighth when Romine took some high, inside fast balls from Rockies pitcher Jairo Diaz. CC Sabathia led the vocal disapproval from the Yankees’ dugout.
Boone didn’t believe that there was malicious intent behind the tight pitches to Romine, but he — like the rest of the team — wasn’t happy about them.
“A lot of balls turn up and in. Any team is going to get a little frustrated at that point,” Romine said. “It’s over with, we won, moving on.”
