Why the ‘skilled labor shortage’ is all about timing

Dear John: The “skilled labor shortage” is BS.

I just got a Master of Science degree in computer science with a focus on artificial intelligence, and every job I apply for has several hundred applicants.

Don’t believe me?

Just go to LinkedIn and search for “data science” or “machine learning” jobs. You will see most of those have more than 100 people applying for them. J.R.

Dear J.R.: OK, I’ll take your word for it.

Maybe you just got the wrong skill at the wrong time.

It happens, especially when someone in the media suddenly mentions how many jobs there are in one particular field and everyone flocks to it.

If I dig up a story about shortages of proctologists, then within a week everyone in med school will be studying butts.

In hindsight, that may not turn out to be a good idea.

Anyway, the best of luck to you. I’m sure it will work out, and a decade from now you’ll be the one doing the hiring
