As Jeff McNeil rounded the bases in the third inning Friday night after blasting a three-run homer to put the Mets up 3-1 against the Pirates, he thought about how it might help his case for convincing his wife to adopt the puppy he had played with prior to the game.
“When I got in the dugout, I said I was getting a puppy,” McNeil said following the Mets’ 6-3 win at Citi Field. “I was pretty happy. How could you not be happy with a puppy in your hands?”
The North Shore Animal League America, the world’s largest no-kill animal rescue and adoption organization, put out a pen of puppies at the stadium in the hope of gaining exposure for adoptions.
Little did they know McNeil would call dibs on one right then and there.
It’s not a done deal yet, although he gave it his best shot by FaceTiming his wife while holding the pup on the field during pregame warmups. He told her how smart the puppy was and that if she just said yes, it was all theirs.
Mets manager Mickey Callaway joked about the idea of McNeil asking his wife’s permission before pulling the trigger and adopting the dog, saying “a real man wouldn’t need to ask his wife for approval.”
“We’re going to go see the puppy again tomorrow, and we’ll talk,” McNeil said. “But I think hitting a home run after holding a puppy — I think it gives me a bargaining chip. My wife wants more homers than we may have to get a puppy.”
