The father of one of the two Canadian teens who were feared missing and are now wanted for murder says his son is suffering from some “very serious” mental issues — and likely on a “suicide mission.”
“He’s going to be dead today or tomorrow,” Alan Schmegelsky told The Canadian Press of his son Bryer.
“They’re going to go out in a blaze of glory. Trust me on this. That’s what they’re going to do.”
Bryer Schmegelsky, 18, and his alleged accomplice, Kam McLeod, 19, are suspected of killing at least three people in British Columbia earlier this month.
The teens, who are both from Port Alberni, have been spotted since their alleged slayings but were still on the run Wednesday. A burnt-out car that cops believe belonged to them was found in Gillam, Man., leading investigators to believe that they’re in the area.
“A normal child doesn’t travel across the country killing people,” said Schmegelsky’s father. “A child in some very serious pain does.”
Schmegelsky and McLeod are accused of killing a couple — identified as Chynna Deese, 24, of Charlotte, North Carolina, and her boyfriend, Lucas Fowler, 23, of Sydney, Australia — sometime between July 14 and 15. They also allegedly murdered a man from Vancouver.
“We are truly heart broken by the sudden and tragic loss of Len,” said the family of victim Leonard Dyck in a statement Wednesday. “He was a loving husband and father. His death has created unthinkable grief and we are struggling to understand what has happened.”
Canadian police have issued warrants for both McLeod and Schmegelsky on second-degree murder charges, according to CTV News.
They are each described as being 6 feet 4 and approximately 169 pounds.
McLeod’s father, Keith McLeod, told CTV News that he couldn’t believe what his son had allegedly done. He described him as a “kind, considerate, caring young man” who had always “been concerned about other people’s feelings.”
“As we are trapped in our homes due to media people, we try to wrap our heads around what is happening and hope that Kam will come home to us safely so we can all get to the bottom of this story,” Keith said.
Alan Schmegelsky said that when he last spoke to his son, he claimed he was heading to Alberta with McLeod to look for jobs.
“I was absolutely flabbergasted to learn two days later … that they were up in the Yukon,” he told the Canadian Press, noting how Bryer claimed to have bought an expensive suit to be interviewed in.
“Now I realize it’s his funeral suit,” said the elder Schmegelsky.
He described his son’s upbringing as being troubled, with his parents’ going through a bitter separation in 2005. The teen allegedly turned to video games and YouTube as his main influences, his father said.
“I’m so sorry all this had to happen. I’m so sorry that I couldn’t rescue you,” said Alan Schmegelsky. “Rest in peace, Bryer. I love you.”
