Mets’ Michael Conforto has found his groove

There have been just five games in July where Michael Conforto hasn’t had a hit.

The right fielder went 2-for-4 with an RBI in the Mets’ 4-0 victory over the Padres on Thursday, securing back-to-back multi-hit performances and his fourth this month.

After returning from a concussion sustained in a collision with Robinson Cano in May, it took Conforto some time to get back into the groove. The right fielder was inconsistent at the plate and struggled to hit with runners in scoring position.

“[Conforto] obviously went through a little bit of a rough patch, he’s coming out of it, he’s swinging the bat much better,” Mets manager Mickey Callaway said after the win. “Kind of like Robbie [Cano], started hitting balls, but at them. Now hopefully they’ll start falling more frequently, but he’s another guy who has been working hard.”

July has been a different story for Conforto, who has 18 hits through the first 17 games this month. He has looked confident in the box and is noticeably more composed when he’s up against a full count, which he managed to capitalize on in the bottom of the third Thursday with a line-drive single to center field.

“We understand his history of some ups and downs, but when he gets hot he can carry anybody,” Callaway said. “I feel like he’s heading in that direction.”
