MINNEAPOLIS — The ball is flying against Jason Vargas, but he has still managed to keep his season afloat.
The veteran lefty surrendered two home runs Wednesday — running his total to eight over his past six starts — but limited the damage in the Mets’ 14-4 victory over the Twins at Target Field.
Vargas (4-5) recorded his first win since June 11 against the Yankees, a span of six starts. His ERA barely moved Wednesday, creeping from 4.23 to 4.25 as the Mets consider their options with Vargas heading to the July 31 trade deadline.
Nelson Cruz and Mitch Garver hit a solo homer apiece against Vargas.
“I think the command just got better [later in the game],” Vargas said. “I tried to do a little less and really focused on keeping the game where it was and that definitely helped out.”
Vargas was coming off a clunker against the Marlins in which he allowed six earned runs over five innings.
“I thought Vargas threw the ball really well,” manager Mickey Callaway said. “Obviously a great lineup, especially against lefties, and he went out there and held them at bay. That is what it takes to win games.”
Callaway defended the decision to pitch Zack Wheeler on the final day before the All-Star break rather than give him an extended rest. The right-hander has since revealed he was pitching with an impingement in his shoulder. He was placed on the injured list this week.
“If you can’t pitch every fifth day in the big leagues you don’t deserve to be a starter, so I think that’s what everybody does and what we’ll continue to do,” Callaway said.
The Mets traded Wilmer Font to the Blue Jays for cash considerations. Font, who arrived in May in a trade with the Rays, had been designated for assignment last week. The right-hander was replaced in the bullpen by rookie Chris Mazza.
The Mets are 5-0 all-time at Target Field and have won 10 of their last 11 games against the Twins overall. The teams split two games at Citi Field in April.
