Matt Harvey’s tenure with the Angels appears over.
The club announced Friday that the former Mets ace had been designated for assignment. The move occurred after Harvey allowed six runs on seven hits over six innings in a home loss to the Astros on Thursday.
“He wasn’t throwing strikes. A couple walks, a couple hard-hit balls. We’ve seen him better, for sure,” Angels manager Brad Ausmus said after the game.
Harvey, the once-upon-a-time Dark Knight, who let up just a run on four hits over 5 ²/₃ inning in his previous start, is pitching to a 7.09 ERA and a 1.54 WHIP over 12 starts in his first season with the Angels. Opponents are batting .275 against him this season.
The Angels could look to trade Harvey over the next seven days or place him on waivers if he refuses to accept the minor league assignment. He would become a free agent if he is not claimed or traded.
Harvey signed a one-year, $11 million contract with the Angels this offseason after splitting last season between the Mets and Reds. The former All-Star, who was with the Mets for five-plus seasons, hasn’t been the same since undergoing surgery for thoracic outlet syndrome in 2016. — With AP
