A British man who disappeared earlier this year when his son claimed he went missing in the Pacific Ocean has been arrested in Colorado on rape charges, cops said.
Kim Vincent Avis, 55 — who is wanted on 24 rape charges in his home country of Scotland — was captured by police in Colorado Springs last week after allegedly disappearing off the coast of California, according to the Monterey County Sheriff’s Office.
The man’s 17-year-old son reported that his father went missing in the waters off Monterey on Feb. 25 after a night time swim at the spot dubbed “Mortuary Beach” — also known as the most dangerous beach in California.
“Many resources were used, including a Coast Guard Helicopter, a Sheriff’s Office drone and our Dive Team to search for Avis with no success,” the Monterey County Sheriff’s Office said in a statement on Friday.
After learning that Avis was out on bail for 24-felony sex abuse charges pending in Scotland, the authorities became suspicious of the drowning tale.
“There was a lack of detail,” sheriff’s Capt. John Thornburg said at the time. “The son, who reported it, couldn’t even tell us where he went in under the water.”
The 17-year-old was returned to Scotland without being charged for filing a false report.
Police in the country were working with authorities in the US to have the suspect extradited.
