Kim Kardashian working to release convicted murderer from prison

Kim Kardashian is taking on a new case.

The reality star and law student, passionate for criminal justice reform, is now hoping to overturn a prison sentence against Kevin Keith, an inmate in Ohio convicted of killing three people.

On Tuesday, Kardashian tweeted out a photo of her chat with Keith in prison.

Keith has been imprisoned since 1994, after being convicted of killing Marichell Chatman, Marchae Chatman and Linda Chatman, according to Cleveland.com. During the attack, he also reportedly shot three other people, though they survived.

At the time, Keith, 55, was given the death penalty. But in 2010, less than two weeks before his execution, then-Governor Ted Strickland commuted his sentence to life in prison given new concerns over the fairness of Keith’s trial.

“I heard about Kevin Keith’s case last year & the more I learn about it, the more I believe the world needs to hear what happened to him!,” Kardashian wrote. “He was on death row & came w/in days of execution before the governor of Ohio commuted his sentence to life w/o parole.”

Kardashian linked to a CleveScene story about the case, and to a documentary being made about Keith’s story.

“I had the pleasure of meeting Kevin Keith through a video visit & was so impressed w/ the amazing programs he created in prison to help others inside better themselves,” said Kardashian. “So much evidence has been uncovered proving Kevin’s innocence. I hope justice is served soon & he is released.”

Kardashian’s social justice efforts first made headlines when she helped get Alice Johnson, a first-time non-violent offender who received life in prison, to be free again in 2018.  In May, it was revealed that the media mogul quietly funded a campaign to free 17 inmates serving life sentences. This year, Kardashian revealed to Vogue that she is studying to be a lawyer through California’s apprenticeship program.
