Rep. Ilhan Omar responded to President Trump and his supporters on Wednesday evening, writing on Twitter that they are going to “have to deal” with her serving in the House of Representatives.
At a campaign rally in Greenville, North Carolina on Wednesday evening Trump blasted Omar as a massive crowd of his supporters chanted “send her back.”
Omar responded to the rhetoric on Twitter, at first quoting the poet Maya Angelou in response to a tweet that included a description of the crowd chanting.
“You may shoot me with your words, You may cut me with your eyes, You may kill me with your hatefulness, But still, like air, I’ll rise,” she wrote.
More than an hour later, the freshman Democrat from Minnesota posted a photo of herself standing at the podium in the House of Representatives.
“I am where I belong, at the people’s house and you’re just gonna have to deal!” she wrote in a tweet that included the image.
Trump’s rally came days after the president said in a series of tweets that Omar and three other freshman congresswomen should “go back and help fix the totally broken and crime-infested places from which they came. Then come back and show us how it is done.”
Trump’s tweet prompted House Democrats to adopt a resolution condemning the statement as “racist.”
Fans of Omar also came to her defense on Wednesday after the rally — including hip-hop superstar Cardi B.
“You know you that b—h when you cause all this conversation,” Bronx-born Cardi wrote in a post on Instagram accompanied by a photo of a smiling Omar.
