The accused killers at center of a massive manhunt by Canadian authorities were stopped by safety officers when they blew through a checkpoint in Manitoba last week — but were let go.
Teenagers Kam McLeod and Bryer Schmegelsky — who are accused of killing Australian tourist Lucas Fowler and his American girlfriend Chynna Deese along with Canadian botanist Leonard Dyck — were stopped after blowing through an alcohol checkpoint, according to Canada CTV News.
“These two individuals kind of drove through the check stop where we had the two constables follow them into the community and stop them,” Nathan Neckoway, the band councillor of the Tataskweyak Cree Nation, said on Tuesday.
The Tataskweyak Cree Nation does not allow alcohol in the area and it is located near Split Lake, the last place that the two have been confirmed sighting.
“We weren’t aware of their status, of them being wanted,” Neckoway said. “Apparently after they came to our community, that’s when they sent out that wanted [status].”
Royal Canadian Mounted Police continue to search for suspects Schmegelsky, 18, and McLeod, 19.
