In the span of 24 hours, five women — including college student Alexandria “Ally” Kostial — were reportedly shot and killed across the state of Mississippi.
The deaths were reported over the weekend by local police officials.
At least two of the victims allegedly knew their killers. The others appeared to have been murdered randomly.
Kostial, a 21-year-old University of Mississippi student from St. Louis, was found Saturday morning — shot eight times — in Harmontown, MS.
Her body was roughly 10 miles away from the Ole Miss campus when deputies discovered it during a routine patrol.
The Alpha Phi sorority member had been attending summer classes at the school. Another student — Brandon Theesfield, 22, of Texas — was arrested Monday and charged with Kostial’s murder. The two of them were photographed together back in 2016, but it’s unclear how they knew each other.
A friend claimed on Twitter Tuesday that Theesfield had “harassed her for years.”
“I spent countless nights holding Ally close drying her tears about this monster for years,” the pal tweeted, telling Theesfield: “You deserve hell you disgusting excuse for a human.”
Kostial was one of four girls under the age of 22 to be fatally shot this past weekend.
Arykah White, 16, was at a sweet sixteen party in Columbus when she was killed on Saturday night, according to the Clarion-Ledger.
An argument had broken out in the parking lot and someone pulled a gun, the newspaper reports.
White — who police described as an “innocent bystander” — wound up being fatally shot. A 17-year-old was arrested Tuesday and charged with her murder.
Shayna Catherine Cline, 19, of Hattiesburg, was found dead early Sunday morning around 3:40 a.m. in a vacant lot. Her boyfriend, 31, is accused of fatally shooting her. Cops encountered him across the street from the lot where Cline’s body was discovered and promptly arrested him, the Clarion-Ledger reports.
Zaria Newton, 20, was shot and killed in Brookhaven on Saturday night during a home invasion.
She had just returned to her residence with her boyfriend — after receiving an alert from a home surveillance system, saying someone had broken into the house — when the two of them were confronted by three suspects. Newton, who was set to turn 21 on Aug. 25, was fatally shot but her boyfriend was unharmed.
Authorities later arrested two of the suspects and killed the other during a shootout with Copiah County deputies, according to the Clarion-Ledger.
Lisa Nguyen, 59, of Hattiesburg, was murdered at her family owned and operated grocery store on Saturday night around 6 p.m., police officials said.
She was reportedly shot during an attempted robbery. Police have not taken any suspects into custody and were still investigating the incident Wednesday.
All of the women who died over the weekend were described by friends and family as good people — who didn’t deserve to have their lives taken.
“Zaria was on the path of doing amazing things,” said Newton’s sister, Zshakira, in an interview with the Clarion-Ledger. “She wasn’t ready to go so soon.”
Kostial’s close friend Anna Pasco wrote on Facebook: “You will be so so missed by everyone’s lives that were honored enough to know you. Thank you for being such an unbelievable friend and always lifting me up and sparking my spirits every time I was around you. There will never be another like you and I pray that justice is served.”
